When you lack relevant experience in the field or occupation that you are seeking, doing volunteer work can be a very viable option.

Volunteering can benefit you in a number of ways by allowing you to:

1) Gain hands-on experience.

2) Check out a particular career or occupation before making long-term commitments.

3) Network with people in a given area who may be able to give you some guidance and direction for job opportunities that are not listed (the hidden job market).

4) Increase your chances of being hired for a position with that organization, since you are already known and have demonstrated your skills, commitment and knowledge to the organization. You will have co-workers that can speak for and support you to management for being the right candidate and team player for that particular job opportunity.
