Salary research should be one of your priorities along with benefits research. Salary and benefits should not be discussed until you are comfortable that you are a good candidate for the position. Be prepared to be open, consider options, and negotiate.

Both employers and applicants have a range they can afford. As an applicant, you must know what your base financial needs are. Take under consideration other benefits the company offers besides an immediate pay check. Small companies, especially, may be able to provide more and better long term options for the right person.

If your beginning base rate is lower than you want, inquire about pay or performance increases. Some employers want to start low and then improve as the employee gains and proves himself / herself.
