    • Measure and cut strips from roll of wallpaper or fabric, using shears or razor.
    • Mix paste, using paste-powder and water, and brush paste onto surface.
    • Trim rough edges from strips, using straightedge and trimming knife.
    • Align and place strips or poster sections of billboard on surface to match adjacent edges.
    • Smooth strips or poster sections with brush or roller to remove wrinkles and bubbles and to smooth joints.
    • Trim excess material at ceiling or baseboard, using knife.
    • Mark vertical guideline on wall to align first strip, using plumb bob and chalk line.
    • Apply acetic acid to damp plaster to prevent lime from bleeding through paper.
    • Staple or tack advertising posters onto fences, walls, or poles.
    • Measure walls and ceiling to compute number and length of strips required to cover surface.
    • Smooth rough spots on walls and ceilings, using sandpaper.
    • Fill holes and cracks with plaster, using trowel.
    • Remove old paper, using water, steam machine, or chemical remover and scraper.
    • Remove paint, varnish, and grease from surfaces, using paint remover and water soda solution.

    Paperhanger Apprentice (under the supervision of experienced Paperhanger)
    • Tended machine that combines paper and plaster to form continuous ribbon of wallboard (plasterboard).
    • Inserted shaft through paper roll, placed plates and collars over ends of shaft, and secured collars with wrench.
    • Mounted and aligned rolls of paper in machine racks, using hoist.
    • Thread paper through guides with unsized surface next to plaster.
    • Started and monitored machine for alignment and defective paper, such as pinholes, rough surface, mill splices, and soiled areas.
    • Stopped machine to cut defective paper from roll and spliced ends by overlapping them and to splice exhausted paper to new roll.
    • Recorded identifying number, weight, and amount of paper wasted for each roll.
