Sample Public Relations Cover Letter

A PUBLIC RELATIONS LETTER is judged especially harshly because of the nature of the business. Though the prevalence of the visual news medium is changing the nature of the business, most people in Public Relations started their career in the print medium, often at a newspaper or magazine. As a result, they typically have a very high standard for persuasive written communication.

Mr. Hands,

As someone who started his career in journalism, I know that you are especially demanding of your public relations managers in all matters related to clear and effective communication. I appreciate the time that you are taking to look over my application and writing samples and give them the consideration that they are due.

As you can see from my resume, I entered the Public Relations field late, after a career in journalism that took me all over the world covering a variety of subjects. Besides giving me a wide and varied body of knowledge to draw from, this experience has taught me the mechanics of getting a story down to its most essential parts in as quick and efficient a manner as possible, a skill I think is especially vital in a Public Relations Manager.

I would like to bring this skill to your organization and put it at the disposal of your clients as a Public Relations Manager. In todayís ever shrinking news cycle, its not enough to merely tell your clientís story well, you must be able to tell it first, and re-tell it quickly enough to adapt to whatever developments follow.

In addition to clips from my day as a journalist, Iíve also included examples of work Iíve performed as a Public Relations Manager. If you like what you see, please give me a call at your convenience and we will talk soon.
