ExxonMobil Company History & Business Activities

Both Exxon & Mobil can trace their roots back to the late 1800's when Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey (Jersey Standard) and Standard Oil Co. of New York (Socony) were incorporated in 1882. Those two companies were the chief predecessors of Exxon and Mobil. The product trademark of "mobiloil" was registered by Socony in 1920. Mobil Chemical Company was established in 1960 and Exxon Chemical Company became a worldwide organization in 1965. In 1999, the companies combined operations as ExxonMobil Chemical, while in 1998, Exxon and Mobil signed an agreement to merge and form Exxon Mobil Corporation. After shareholder and regulatory approvals, the merger was completed November 30, 1999.

ExxonMobil explores for oil and natural gas on 6 continents and the company pursues and evaluates all high-quality exploration opportunities with over 115 million undeveloped acres in 33 countries at the end of 2005.

The company is the world's largest global refining company with a network of manufacturing facilities and transportation and distribution systems that provide clean fuels, lubricants, and other high-value products. Overall, their refinaries are 65% larger than average.

ExxonMobil Chemical is one of the largest producers of olefins, polyolefins, paraxylene and benzene and the company holds a strong position in the supply chain for many of the petrochemicals in the global economy.
