Getting Results From Networking

There are several ways of communicating with your network contacts predominantly face-to-face, telephone or in writing. The most effective method of all is to actually meet your contact in a face-to-face setting.

The simple truth is that a meeting produces both more information and more opportunities. Effective communication ensures the exchange of information and in truth ideas and suggestions are created from two-way conversation and face-to-face discussion.

A telephone conversation is inadequate for the simple reason that you could get your contact at a bad time when they are unable to give you their complete attention. People are very often distracted on the telephone, thinking of tasks, deadlines etc that they have to complete that day.

Writing is even less effective; with so many of us living busier lives than ever, the likelihood is that the letter will be read and promptly forgotten about.

Therefore arranging a meeting whereby you are given the full attention of your contact is by far the most effective method you can employ.

The meeting when scheduled for a convenient time gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your skills and potential and will impress upon your contact your enthusiasm for the acquisition of a new role.

This meeting should be conducted as though it were an interview when you meet with a contact you have been referred to. More often than not these people are doing this as a favour to a friend or colleague and so they must be impressed by what they see before them if they are to refer you or provide you with job opportunities.
