Contract Visual Information Designer for Major Retailer
The award winning, e-commerce division of a major retailer is looking for a contract Visual Information Designer. In this role you will be partnering with the information architects to create user-centered designs for the company's multiple, consumer facing e-commerce sites. You will be making major design choices that are only updated every few years (as opposed to marketing design) and include projects such as deciding how the overall product pages will be laid out, how to call consumers' attention to certain features, etc. This role calls for someone with a design background but also with an understanding of how ecommerce sites and the user experience works. Note: This is a new position and it may be 20-40 hours a week and could go perm depending on the needs of the team. Day-to-day hours are flexible and there is some flexibility to work from home.
Duties:
Represent the visual design discipline in brainstorm/ideation sessions focused on new features and functionality.
Develop a clear understanding of the end user's needs and objectives.
Create visual information design solutions for concepts developed with the Information Architects. This includes developing web page layouts and information design, typographic treatments, iconography and custom user interface elements (e.g., buttons, tabs).
Prepare specifications for designs that will be used by others to build prototypes for user-testing.
Create imaged-mapped jpeg, flash or clickable-pdf "slideshow" prototypes for user testing.
Interface with the creative teams from each of the brands and develop design specifications and guidelines for them to follow when "skinning" new features.
Requirements:
3-5 years professional experience in web application design, and/or information design.
Strong and flexible skills in visual interactive design, with specific experience in developing designs for web applications.
Knowledgeable about user-centered interface design processes and methodology, particularly as applied to web-based applications. Hands on experience putting theory into practice.
Excellent customer instincts and a passion for creating outstanding customer experiences.
Able to clearly articulate design rationale and recommendations. Experience working with multidisciplinary teams.
Expert knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (e.g. Photoshop, Flash etc.).
HTML coding experience helpful.
Expert knowledge of the latest web technologies and constraints, cross browser and platform issues.
BA in Graphic Design, Communication Design, Information Design or related field.
Note: You MUST have online samples of websites that demonstrate the above requirements namely that you have designed for web applications.
