ARE HIGH GAS PRICES

CRIMPING COMMUTERS

AND EMPLOYERS?

BY JULIE SANON .

Gas prices continue to hike to an all-time high of more than $3 per gallon, and employers in the Tampa Bay area and throughout the country find many job candidates are evaluating the distance they are willing to drive for a new job.

Shrinking candidate radius

When gas prices go up, the average driver is more aware of how expensive it is to commute. The result is a smaller radius for prospective job candidates. People now factor in the cost of the commute much more than ever before when looking to change jobs.

Gasoline costs affect the bottom line of consumer pocketbooks and it is no surprise that it's now high on the list of items taken into consideration when looking to trade in their vehicles, stay at a job or move on in their career. There are options, though, for both candidates and employers.

One way to keep the candidate pool high for new jobs is to consider accommodating potential and current employees who wish to reduce commuting time. Luring new employees with alternative scheduling or work from home opportunities can greatly increase your pool of candidates. Also, candidates who were not willing to accept a lower offer before may consider an exchange of lower salary for closer commute. Encouraging and facilitating car pooling is another option as well as rethinking recruitment tools and techniques.

Alternative options

One key objective for Tampa Bay WorkForce.Alliance (TBWA) is to help employers retain their workers. Many companies are sharing that they will explore new or different considerations to retain their work force and act promptly and in accordance with their business philosophies and resources to compete with escalating high prices at the pump.

Several companies have already responded by offering employees cost-cutting incentives to keep tenure high. Flexible work weeks, for example, are gaining popularity. Flex work weeks allow employees to work condensed work weeks; 40 hours in four days. Four-day work weeks can cut fuel consumption and traffic by as much as 20 percent.

Local area business Acuity Solutions, which specializes in data security solutions, was presented with the Business Excellence Award by TBWA in 2006 in part for its recognition of employee well-being by offering flexible work schedules.

Another option Bay area companies have begun offering is commuting to work four days a week and telecommuting on the fifth day. The Girl Scouts of the Suncoast Council, another area company recognized with the 2007 Business Excellence Award for their high retention, accommodates employees through both flex schedules and telecommuting.

In an employee survey following MetLife's Tampa Bay pilot telecommuting program, telecommuters reported a 70-percent boost in morale. About 67 percent of the teleworkers stated they would not look for another job as long as they could telework.

With low employee morale being one of the leading causes for people to look for other jobs, telecommuting

can greatly boost employee retention.

There is no cookie-cutter approach; but companies can improve their retention levels and continue to attract a candidate pool with strategies that leverage resources and maintain or possibly increase productivity.

Tampa Bay Work Force Alliance is a member of the Greater Tampa Chamber's Committee of One Hundred. If you are a local employer, and a Chamber volunteer calls and offers you the opportunity to participate and share your thoughts in the local business interview process, please take the call. During the interview, questions related to the quality of today's workforce and the availability of that workforce are discussed. Your answers will drive actions at the local and state level. What strategies do you have in place to cultivate and retain your workforce? Are you finding the highest levels of skills training to meet your needs to succeed in business? Change happens. Growth happens. If you don't know what programs are available and would like to know more, please call the Committee of One Hundred at 813.276.9405.

Julie Sanon is senior vice president of operations, Tampa Bay WorkForce Alliance. She can be reached at (813) 740-4680 ext 248.
