About the Department .
Hutch School, a K-12 program jointly funded by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Public Schools, serves school-aged patients and family members of patients who are temporarily living in Seattle to receive medical treatment at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. The school provides 1:1 tutoring for patients and maintains multi-age classrooms with 2-15 students per class with the population changing throughout the year. .
This position will work closely with the small school staff to fill the duties involved with this unique program, such as participating in and helping to coordinate field trips and/or other K-12 extra-curricular activities. Examples of these activities include trips to the YMCA, hikes/ walks at local parks, kayaking, and additional art and music projects, etc. .
Major Duties .
Hutch School is seeking a part-time (16 18 hours a week) teacher for the multi-age, 8th 12th grade program. Duties for this position will include creating, teaching and/or coordinating the math and science programs for family members in the regularly changing, multi-age classroom 2 or 3 mornings, and tutoring patients in the afternoon. This involves maintaining records of the work students complete, creating appropriately challenging curriculum, aligning student curriculum to the level they will be returning to, evaluating individual progress, and working closely with the other part time high school teacher to create a complete program. The math curriculum will come from the students home school and be taught during the morning program and the science curriculum will be group focused and may include environmental science, the study of genes as related to cancer and cancer treatment, or another topic that meets the needs of the current class. Students will also have individual tutors to complete course work from home. .
Qualifications for the job include:
? Several years experience as a math and/ or science teacher at the secondary level
? Proficiency with computers
? A teaching certificate
? A driver s license that has been valid for at least one year and a clean record
? The ability to drive a 15-passenger van
? Desire to work closely with a small multidisciplinary team to maintain school organization and goals
? Desire to create and integrate curriculum
? Willingness to learn about the medical situation of the students and their families, and to support their emotional needs
? Interest in participating in all areas of running a small school .
