Idaho Lawmakers Might Reconsider Micron Tax Breaks After Layoffs

BOISE, ID - Some Idaho lawmakers are questioning tax cuts and other incentives given to Micron Technology.

They say they expected the company to produce more jobs in the area.

Instead, the company is cutting some 1,100 workers from its Boise facility after losing $225 million in the third quarter that ended May 31st.

Some lawmakers are also annoyed that the company suggested a $1 billion plant might be built in Boise, causing lawmakers to offer tax breaks.

The company last year instead announced it will build a $3 billion plant in Singapore.

In March, the company opened its first factory in China, saving money on low wages that easily exceeds the incentives offered by Idaho lawmakers.

A 14-member interim committee of lawmakers will begin meeting August 1st to study billions of dollars worth of tax breaks, including those to Micron, and then make a report to the 2008 Legislature.

Some lawmakers say they want to eliminate some exemptions to lower overall tax rates.
