AZ Governor Signs Bill Banning The Hiring Of Illegal Immigrants

Associated Press

July 2, 2007

PHOENIX - Governor Napolitano has signed into law a proposal that prohibits people from hiring illegal immigrants.

The Democratic governor signed the new law today. It requires all businesses to verify the employment eligibility of workers through a federal database.

Her approval of the bill marks the end of a 3-year fight at the Republican-controlled Legislature to create state-imposed employer sanctions.

The goal is to weaken the economic incentive for immigrants to sneak across the border and lessen Arizona's role as the busiest illegal gateway into the nation.

The governor says, however, that the bill has major flaws and she was willing to call a special session of the Legislature to address them.
