Work closely with the Bridge and Pump Superintendent on scheduling of work assignments and policy matters related to bridge operations; remain on 24-hour call in case of emergency requiring immediate bridge and pumping plant repairs.
Inspect all bridges regularly to check mechanical condition, note repairs needed, and assist bridge tenders with operating or maintenance problems, plans needed repairs and replacements, and submit estimates.
Plan and supervise new electrical and mechanical installations as required.
Direct or supervise the painting and repair of wooden, steel, and concrete bridge structures.
Confer with Bridge and Pump Superintendent on problems of major maintenance and repair.
Direct, supervise, and personally perform varied maintenance tasks, such as servicing and overhauling switches, relays, generators, motors, governors, photoelectric controls, timing devices, and other equipment.
Repair, or replacing hydraulic brakes, reducing gears, traffic gate mechanisms, shims, bearings and pumps, and other mechanical equipment including work done by service contractors.
Supervise the maintenance of large pump systems including pumps, gear drive components, and engine and motor assemblies, and all control and recording devices.
Supervise general shop work requiring skill in the use of a wide variety of machine tools and equipment including drill presses, grinders, air and hydraulic presses, and arc and gas welding, brazing and soldering equipment.
Order supplies and parts required for bridges and pumping plant maintenance and repair, check on delivery, and supervise proper storage.
Keep detailed operational records and make reports.
