WILMINGTON, DE. - As college graduates attempt to enter the workforce, many are facing unanticipated issues and challenges.
Today's employers seek candidates whose skills go beyond the core requirements," said Sarah Baker Andrus, director of academic programs for Vector Marketing, the direct sales distributor for Cutco Cutlery. "While they may meet a checklist of abilities, many graduates don't understand other issues related to securing a job, and this can lead to
a mismatch as they seek that first position."
Andrus works closely with universities throughout the United States and Canada since Cutco, the largest kitchen cutlery manufacturer in North America, sells its products through a network of college students who sell during in-home personal demonstrations.

Andrus has the following advice for these graduates:
|
| 1. |
|
Don't overlook the importance of job environment. Do you prefer a large corporation or small office setting? Is the culture laid-back or formal? |
| 2. |
|
Pursue meaningful summer jobs or internships that allow you to check out a career and give you an edge. |
| 3. |
|
Set realistic financial goals for the first job. |
| 4. |
|
Spend significant time during senior year identifying potential employers. |
| 5. |
|
Conduct informational interviews with people several years older who hold jobs you're interested in. |
| 6. |
|
Be a well-prepared candidate. Research the company prior to the interview. |
| 7. |
|
Don't compare offers strictly on salary. Benefits, tuition assistance, and potential for advancement are other issues to consider. |
Vector Marketing recruits and trains college students as sales representatives. In addition to an initial three-day training program, students participate in advanced training and professional development that develops a wide range of skills, including time management, presentation, lead generation, customer service and how to work in a commission-structured environment.
"These skills are valuable whether students pursue a career with Vector Marketing or in other industries," added Andrus. "Many of our sales reps have sold Cutco for several years and then comfortably transition into other careers because of the skills they have developed with us."
