Detroit Automakers, UAW To Spar Over Jobs Bank During TalksAssociated Press

FLINT, MI - Detroit's automakers are expected to seek an overhaul the jobs bank program when they meet the UAW this summer during contract talks.
The two-decades-old program in which laid-off workers get most of their pay is costing the companies billions.
But union members at local in Flint consider protecting the jobs bank a mission.
General Motors has paid Flint job bankers between 70- and $85,000 a year. They still enjoy health care coverage, and collect years of service toward their pensions.
The jobs bank was created in exchange for the UAW's help in making auto plants more flexible and automated.
But Detroit's automakers have become more efficient, no longer needing as many workers to run a plant.
