Dear Members,
Our fund-raising and tutoring efforts at Boys Country have been an overwhelming success. During the past four months, you have contributed $120,000 and donated more than 1,240 hours of volunteer time in helping the students master this semester’s studies.
With the $120,000, the 8,000 square-foot dormitory that houses from 22 to 26 boys can be renovated and expanded to include eight other badly needed bedrooms and a large recreational game room. The directors also plan to buy two personal computers for the boys’ use in their school work and as part of their own learning and entertainment.
We don’t have to tell you what the hours spent in personal tutoring meant to the boys’ attitudes about school work and to their own self-esteem. Ten of you spent two hours two evenings a week during the entire semester working one-on-one with these children. As a result, 12 of the 14 boys saw a drastic improvement in their grades. No less important than their academic achievement, their improved attitudes about themselves and their abilities can be attributed to knowing someone cares about them individually.
