Show confidence and pride, rather than obligation, in granting approval; bestow the promotion and/or raise as if it were a reward—which it is. Don’t sound begrudging or matter-of-fact. Remember, although employees will not be unhappy to receive a raise or promotion, they have other needs to be met, including the need for recognition and security. Approve with elaboration and with commendation for a job well done, specifically mentioning one or two of the most important contributions or skills acquired, but remember that effusive flattery sounds insincere.
