SUBJECT:       Performance Appraisal—Michael Beane

During the present review period, Michael Beane’s performance has been fully satisfactory; his work meets expectations for a qualified and experienced maintenance supervisor. With attention to the developmental needs outlined below, he will become an excellent performer in this position.

Strengths

•     Effective supervisory skills: He has been able to determine equipment maintenance and repair priorities. He has managed to schedule support of production equipment and facility needs with a minimum of downtime. He shows complete knowledge of work in progress and can estimate completion dates within a few hours of actual repair.

•     Effective cost-control efforts: He has located multiple suppliers for several critical replacement parts, thus reducing long lead times and high shipping costs. Additionally, he has found ways to use in-house skills of his staff to support engineering projects usually requiring outside contract work.

•     Excellent equipment knowledge, both mechanical and electrical: This knowledge has contributed to work direction, priority scheduling, and maintenance procedures.

Developmental Needs

•     Knowledge of variable and base operating expense budgets, both their planning and control: I plan to arrange a two-day meeting with all first-line supervisors in my division and discuss with them how Jedmont’s business philosophy applies specifically to their job assignments and spending decisions. Then two months after that meeting, Michael and the other supervisors will present me with budget forecasts for next year.

•     Improvement in both verbal and written communication skills: I have requested the Training Department schedule Michael in the first communications seminar available this spring, March 4-7. After this seminar, we’ll be working closely in editing interdepartmental memos that go out of his office.

Michael has agreed with these comments, as indicated by his signature below, and is looking forward to another year of improved performance as maintenance supervisor.
