Wal-Mart opened its first store in Rogers, AR in 1962, and by 1967 was operating 24 stores in Arkansas. In 1968, the company branched out, opening stores in Missouri and Oklahoma and Wal-mart incorporated on October 31, 1969. The first distribution center and home office, located in Bentonville, AR, opened in 1970 .. by 1979, Wal-Mart had 276 stores, located in 11 states and is the first company to reach $1 billion in sales in such a short period of time. Wal-Mart opened the first Sam's Club, located in Midwest City, OK, in 1983 and by 1989 the company had 16 distribution centers and had stores in 26 states.
Founder, Sam Walton passed away on April 5, 1992, shortly after being presented with the Medal of Freedom by President George Bush. That same year saw the company branching into Puerto Rico and they are now located in 45 states. Co-founder James Lawrence "Bud" Walton passed away in 1995. By then Wal-Mart was operating 1,995 Wal-Mart Stores, 239 Supercenters, 433 Sam's Clubs and 276 international stores. In 1999, Wal-Mart was ranked #1 Corporate Citizen in America in the Cone/Roper Report and that year the company employed 1,140,000 associates, which made it the largest private employer in the world.
With the turn of the century, Wal-Mart Stores continued to grow and today the company maintains more than 6,200 facilities worldwide, including 3,800 stores in the United States. In 2005, Wal-Mart opened experimental stores that conserve natural resources and save energy in McKinney, TX and Aurora, CO and the company launched the "Acres for America" program to conserve critical wildlife habitats.
