Employment Overview

Nationally, there are 201,000 EMTs. The occupation is characterized by a very low joblessness level. The unemployment rate for employees was 3% in 2006.

Flexibility

EMTs working less than full time, whether by design or chance, were 11% of the total.

Education

Successful workers find it useful to have a postsecondary vocational award. According to recent surveys, 14% of employees had received a degree. EMTs with some schooling beyond high school, but not a college degree, total about 68%. A high school degree was all that was needed for 18% of workers.

Local Outlook

Looking at employees per capita, Johnstown (Pennsylvania), Anderson (South Carolina), and St. Joseph (Missouri) rise to the top of the list. West Palm Beach (Florida), Spokane (Washington), and Tacoma (Washington) have the fewest per capita. The highest salaries for EMTs are in and around Racine (Wisconsin), Tacoma (Washington), and Olympia (Washington). The lowest-paying areas are Peoria (Illinois), Anderson (Indiana), and Cedar Rapids (Iowa).
