CINCINNATI - Unemployment in the Tri-state is at a 15-year high, and workers are encouraged to develop a game plan if they believe their job could be at risk.

“You need to think about, ‘Why would I be the one they would keep, in the event they would have to have layoffs,’” said career counselor Andrea Kay. “Know why you matter.”

With investment banks going belly-up and the economy foundering, Kay said many workers have shifted into survival mode.

“Realize this is a cycle, this is something you want to anticipate, no matter what industry you're in, and know you're going to get through it, but you've got to do your homework now – do not wait,” Kay said.

Workers should assess their own knowledge, skills and experience, and determine how valuable they are to their employer, Kay said.

“Know very clearly – have a really airtight understanding of the gist of you, all the things, all those things you have to bring to an employer,” Kay said.

Even if workers believe their job is safe, Kay said they should have a backup plan.

“Have your ducks in a row, know why you're valuable, have the resume ready (and) have your network ready,” she said.
