A training program for veterans will be offered through the Maryland Transit Administration to help them find civilian jobs.

State officials unveiled plans Monday to fill open slots in Transit Administration classes with veterans. The transit organization's staff is offering courses in topics that include bus operations, business writing, maintenance training for light rail and Metro, financial planning, communications, basic computer skills and customer service.

Honorably discharged Maryland veterans will be offered seats in those classes.

Veterans age 19 to 25 have an unemployment rate of 25 percent, according to the state. Maryland's average unemployment rate this year is 3.9 percent, according to the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

There are 470,000 military veterans in Maryland, state officials say.
