The unemployment rate in upstate New York rose slightly in September compared to the same month in 2006, according to the state Department of Labor.
Upstate New York posted an unemployment rate of 4.2 for the month, up from 4.1 in September in 2006. However, compared to August, the unemployment rate dropped from 4.3 on a seasonally adjusted basis.
For the state as a whole, the unemployment rate in September was 4.6, up from 4.3 in September 2006, but down from 4.9 in August 2007. The number of non-farm jobs in the state rose 0.1 percent to 7.2 million compared to August on a seasonally adjusted basis.
"In September 2007, the seasonally adjusted private sector job count in New York state grew over the month at the same rate as in the nation. In addition, the state's unemployment rate dropped below the comparable figure for the U.S.," said Norman Steele, the bureau chief for research and evaluation, division of research and statistics.
In the Albany, Schenectady, Troy metropolitan area, non-farm jobs rose 0.3 percent to 1,400 compared to September 2006. The unemployment rate was 3.7 percent in September 2007, up from 3.6 percent in September 2006.
