LANSING, MI. - The state's seasonally adjusted jobless rate increased to 7.6 percent in December. Michigan's annual average jobless rate for 2007 was 7.2 percent and the state wound up with a smaller-sized work force for the first time since 2003.

The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth said that's due to buyouts and continued restructuring in the state's auto industry.

Michigan lost about 78,000 nonfarm payroll jobs since December 2006, including 25,000 manufacturing jobs. Total employment in Michigan fell by about 90,000 during the year.
