Unemployment Process 'Demeaning, Confusing'

I am a hardworking 27-year-old bricklayer who has just finished my apprenticeship in the field. In January, I was laid off.

This event, once again, forced me to apply for unemployment benefits. A process I hate.

Each year I try to avoid layoffs, as much as I can. Not only because I enjoy my work, but the income far exceeds the supplemental income supplied by my unemployment benefits. In addition, the process of claiming benefits is demeaning, confusing, mysterious and lonely.

Claiming unemployment is one problem after another. I understand there are many who abuse the system. However, those of us who do not would just like to get through it in order to make it until our next job assignment. Why must it be so difficult?

Perhaps our new governor and elected officials will take the opportunity to look into this.
