Losing your job is definitely a life-changing experience, and it can become a life-threatening event if you allow that to happen.
Unemployment rocks you to the core - it's like getting a punch to the stomach — and ranks right up there with the death of a loved one or a divorce.
But fortunately, in Chautauqua County, there is plenty of help for job seekers. Even the system for filing for your unemployment benefits has been streamlined, thanks to the Information Age.
Many of our readers may remember the days of going to two different buildings on Lake Shore Drive West in Dunkirk to fill out the necessary paperwork when they lost their jobs — one state Labor Department office to obtain unemployment benefits, the other to look for work.
Today, the system is online, thanks to the Internet and toll-free telephone numbers, both in terms of finding a job and filing for your benefits. And the folks who work at the Labor Department and Chautauqua Works — now located in a shared building at 200 Lake Shore Drive W. — are friendly, helpful and understanding. A big change from 25 years ago!
Staffers there do admit that the current economy in Chautauqua County is not very friendly to job seekers, but officials at all levels of government and those in the private sector — such as the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce — are working to change that.
We need to attract more industry, retain our current employers and expand our tax base to reduce the burden on every resident of Chautauqua County!
