The coming of Really Cool Foods to the Indiana Gateway Industrial Park is great news, said Doug Howard, executive director of the Economic Development Group of Connersville.
Even though Connersville was a contender for the company, its location in a neighboring county is still a plus, Howard said.
“We see Wayne County as a sister and partner, not a competitor,” Howard said. “It’s close enough for our folks to work there and our airport fits the bill to bring business jets in easily for Really Cool Foods executives.”
Howard expects Fayette County’s unemployment rate to reach 12 to 15 percent by the end of the year when Visteon closes its doors for good.
The final closure of a Rushville factory will also cost 39 Fayette County residents their jobs, Howard said.
“We had 50 to 60 laid off last month and expect 200 to be laid off this month,” Howard said. Fayette County’s August unemployment rate led the state at 7.8 percent.
Last week, EDG withdrew from the Eastern Indiana Development District, which includes Wayne, Randolph, Henry and Union counties. EDG is stressed for resources to help local businesses and the $10,000 yearly membership fee paid for grant writing and other services weren’t needed by EDG, Howard said.
Fayette County may be a better fit with a southeastern regional group, although the county hasn’t joined any other regional development group, Howard said.
