Unemployment Claims Spike in OctoberAtlanta Business Chronicle
November 9, 2006
The number of laid-off workers in Georgia who filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits rose 29 percent from September to October, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.
The state reported 39,456 filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in October. Initial claims were also up 8.8 percent from 36,252 filed in October 2005.
Most of the increase in claims over the month and year came in manufacturing industries, as a number of plants closed their doors and laid-off workers, the Department of Labor said. Initial claims are considered to be a leading economic indicator, because they measure newly laid-off workers.
Atlanta's initial claims from September to October rose 11 percent from 12,885 to 14,292.
