The Georgia Department of Labor reported Thursday the number of laid-off workers who filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits jumped 16 percent in November.

The DOL said 48,150 laid-off workers filed first-time claims in November, due primarily to seasonal layoffs in the manufacturing industries. The number of initial claims filed in November is up 1.4 percent from November 2006, when 47,487 were filed.

In Atlanta, claims went up 3.4 percent, from 17,044 in October to 17,632 in November.
