WASHINGTON - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits has gone up in the past week.

The Labor Department says jobless claims rose by 6,000 last week, to 322,000.

The increase was unexpected. Analysts had been looking for a decline of around 1,000.

The four-week average for claims was also up, rising by 4,750 to 312,500.
