Unemployment Claims Drop 3.2% in JuneAtlanta Business Chronicle
July 13, 2006
The Georgia Department of Labor reported July 13 that 34,275 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in June -- a decrease of 3.2 percent from May.
The claims were down mostly in the service industries, the Department of Labor said.
Initial claims were also down from 34,450 filed in June 2005 for an over-the-year decrease of 0.5 percent.
Atlanta's initial claims were down 3.2 percent, from 15,800 to 15,297.
Initial claims are considered to be a leading economic indicator, because they measure newly laid-off workers.
