Unemployment Benefits Can Now Be Directly Deposited Into Bank Accounts

Maine officials say that with the start of the new year, unemployment benefits can be deposited directly into recipients' bank accounts.

The state Labor Department says unemployment recipients can still receive checks. By choosing direct deposit, they'll receive faster payments because there's no longer a need for the Postal Service to deliver checks.

Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman says electronic transactions also cost the state less because they don't involve printing and mailing of paper checks.

The Labor Department says the first week of January is often the busiest time of year for new unemployment claims due to temporary layoffs after the holidays.

Laid-off workers can get access information about their unemployment claims, tax withholding information and account balances online.
