The Memphis MSA had one of the nation's highest unemployment rates in September, federal officials reported Wednesday.

The unemployment rate in the Memphis area was 5.2 percent, reports the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's exceeded only by Detroit (7 percent) and Louisville (5.3 percent). Next in line was the Kansas City MSA at 5.1 percent.

Memphis' unemployment rate at the same time a year ago was 5.5 percent.

The lowest metro unemployment rate can be found a short drive away: Birmingham enjoyed a rate of just 3 percent, a tie with the Washington, D.C., MSA.

Nationwide, unemployment was lower in September in 294 areas, higher in 61 areas and unchanged in 12.
