Unemployment Among Black Teenagers Jumps: Now Reported To Be Seven Times National Average

According to figures released last week by the Labor Department, the jobless rate among African American teenagers in June jumped to seven times the national unemployment rate.

White teenage unemployment is also at its highest level in two years.

But while the overall unemployment rate remains at a historically modest 4.5 percent, the percentage of the nation's Black teenagers looking for work and unable to find it jumped to 31.2 percent last month.

Social analysts frequently argue that teens who are unable to find summer jobs often become adults who are unable to find regular employment.

The government's figures only include those Black teenagers actively looking for work. Unemployed teens who have become discouraged and stopped looking for work are not counted as unemployed.
