Unemployment rates rose in Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties between June 2004 and June 2005, but jobless rates in Northern Kentucky still remain among the state's lowest, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training in the Education Cabinet.
Statewide, unemployment rates rose in 86 Kentucky counties over the past year, and three counties had jobless rates at or above 10 percent.
Woodford County's 4.4 percent rate was the lowest in the commonwealth. Boone County also posted one of the state's lowest unemployment rates at 4.8 percent. But that was up from the 4.3 percent jobless rate that Boone County reported in June 2004.
In Campbell County, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent, which was up from the 5 percent rate posted in June 2004. Kenton County had a jobless rate of 5.3 percent for June 2005. That was up from 4.8 percent in June 2004. Magoffin County in Eastern Kentucky recorded the state's highest unemployment rate at 11.7 percent. It was followed by Elliott County, with 10.4 percent, and Wolfe County, with 10.1 percent.
Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than to count people working. Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks. These statistics are not seasonally adjusted to allow for comparisons between United States, state and counties figures.
