Virginia's unemployment rate rose in June to 4.2%.

That's the highest level since February's 4.3% figure, but below the 4.4% rate reported in June of last year.

Virginia Employment Commission chief economist Bill Metzger says the rise is normal for this time of year, and attributed it to students out of school and entering the work force. The concentration of young people in cities resulted in higher jobless rates in all of Virginia's metropolitan areas compared with May, when the statewide unemployment rate stood at 3.9%.

Mathews and Middlesex counties tied for the state's lowest jobless rate, at 1.9%.

The unemployment rate for northern Virginia in June was 2.8%. In May it was 2.7%; but last June it was 3.3%.

Metzger says employment is growing in the Fredericksburg area, with the notable exception of the construction industry. He says the area appears to be over slowdowns caused by 9-11 and layoffs in the technology sector.

In Spotsylvania County, June's unemployment rate was 2.8%, up from 2.6% in May and up from 2.3% last June. Stafford County saw unemployment in June rise to 2.8% in June from 2.6% in May, and 2.5% last June. The unemployment rate in June in the city of Fredericksburg was 5.8%, up from 5.7% in May but down from 6.9% last June. Caroline County's jumped from 4.4% in May, and 3.9% last June, to 4.6%.

The highest unemployment rate in the state in June was in Danville, at 14.5%, and Martinsville was at 13.5%.
