Unemployment Benefits Extended

On May 28, 2003, President Bush signed into law a continuation of the Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) benefits program. These extended benefits are 100% federally funded.

This temporary extension makes available additional unemployment benefits to persons who have exhausted their regular state benefits. Claimants who have already received a TEUC extension of benefits will not be eligible for another extension.

"Tennessee claimants who may qualify for these additional federal benefits will be notified by mail once they have exhausted all state eligibility. It will not be necessary to call or go to their local Career Center or Department of Labor & Workforce Development office to apply," "said Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Commissioner Jim Neeley.

This extension provides up to 13 additional weeks of benefits depending on each individual's previous history of eligibility. The TEUC program was scheduled to expire on May 31, 2003, but this new legislation continues the opportunity for filing through December 27, 2003, and allows a continuation of benefits payments until March 27, 2004, for those who may not have exhausted their eligibility.
