Georgia's Rising Unemployment Provided By:
The Atlanta Business Chronicle
Thursday, June 12, 2003
The Georgia Department of Labor reporter of 50,875 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in May, an increase over April when 49,658 claims were filed.
May marks the third consecutive month that initial claims have risen in Georgia, for a 17 percent increase since February. A total of 42,944 initial claims were filed in May 2002. Initial claims are considered to be a leading economic indicator, because they measure newly laid-off workers.
"The fact that initial claims have risen for three consecutive months suggests that the economy has not yet turned around," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond.
Claims were up primarily in manufacturing and retail trade.
In Atlanta, claims actually dropped from 20,504 to 19,282 in May.
