Initial claims for unemployment insurance in Texas rose last week to 14,608, a 7 percent increase over the prior week.

The number of initial claims for benefits jumped 17 percent compared with the same week in 2007, according to data from the Texas Workforce Commission.

Continuing jobless claims -- those who have received benefits for more than one week -- fell to 108,415 last week, a 3.1 percent decrease from a week earlier. But that number is 17 percent higher than during the same week a year ago.

Year-over-year continuing figures provide a more stable view of the status of unemployment claims.

The claims data supports a report released by the Workforce Commission two weeks ago that showed a spike in the statewide unemployment rate in May to 4.3 percent, up from 3.9 percent in April.
