COLUMBUS, OH - At least nine state employees are accused of collecting unemployment benefits at the same time they were processing jobless claims, according to a state agency's internal investigation.
The names of the employees were not released because of federal privacy regulations, said Jon Allen, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. He said he also could not reveal how much money was involved.
"Federal law prohibits us from disclosing any of this information, even if those employees received the money unlawfully," he said.
It is illegal to collect benefits that people aren't entitled to, and there is a potential for criminal charges, Allen said.
Two of the employees resigned Tuesday. The remaining workers under investigation are both full- and part-time employees, Allen said.
According to investigation reports, the two employees who resigned said they filed for benefits by mistake. One volunteered to repay the money, and the other offered several explanations, including possible identity theft.
The investigation is continuing, Allen said.
The department ran a computer match of all unemployment compensation employees that uncovered several of the cases, he said.
