Workforce West Virginia has recovered over $100,000 in fraudulent unemployment benefits during the second fiscal quarter of 2009. The official numbers put the total at $129,928.08 in illegal benefits.
The Unemployment Compensation Division has detected over 129 fraudulent claims and requested warrants in 27 of those cases. Fraudulent claims were found in Berkeley, Boone, Cabell, Fayette, Greenbrier, Jefferson, Kanawha, Marion, Mercer, Mineral, Monongalia, Ohio, Preston and Wyoming.
If a person is found committing fraud against the state employment agency, he or she can face a number of consequences including a one-year disqualification from receiving future unemployment benefits, repayment of overpaid benefits, possible fines and jail time, and potential civil suits.
