SACRAMENTO, CA - Some state workers scheduled to be furloughed two days a month might be able to collect state unemployment insurance benefits.

Loree Levy with the California Employment Development Department said Monday that "seasonal, part-time, and intermittent" state workers could be "potentially" eligible, based on lost hours and several other factors.

Levy did not have an estimate for how many workers might apply for benefits, but said it is unlikely that most full-time state workers would qualify.

Unemployment insurance is paid through taxes imposed on employers and is meant to replace 50 percent of lost wages. The weekly benefit ranges from $40 to $450.

Last week, California's unemployment insurance fund ran dry and has since been borrowing money from the federal government in order to pay benefits.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a fiscal emergency as California faces a $42 billion budget deficit through June 2010.

A Sacramento County Superior Court judge on Thursday sided with Schwarzenegger in his bid to save money by forcing more than 200,000 state workers to take days off without pay.
