The unemployment rate in the Silicon Valley was 11 percent in March, up from a revised 10.2 percent in February and above the year-ago estimate of 5.3 percent, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.

This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 11.5 percent for California and 9 percent for the nation during the same period.

Broken down, the unemployment rate was 16.2 percent in San Benito County and 10.8 percent in Santa Clara County.

In the year-to-year period, total employment in the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara metropolitan statistical area fell by 36,200 jobs, or 3.9 percent.

Professional and business services contracted for the sixth consecutive month on a year-over basis, down by 9,300 jobs. More than three-fifths of those job cuts took place at employment services (including temporary agencies).

Trade, transportation, and utilities lost 8,500 jobs since last March. Retail trade fell by 5,500 jobs, reflecting scattered losses.

Manufacturing (down 7,000 jobs); construction (down 6,000 jobs); and financial activities (down 2,400 jobs) each experienced reductions over the year.

Meanwhile, total farm employment rose by 11.1 percent from last March, adding 500 jobs in the metro area.

The unemployment rate in the San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood City metropolitan statistical area was 8.5 percent in March, up from a revised 7.9 percent in February and above the year-ago estimate of 4.3 percent.

Broken down, the unemployment rate was 7.4 percent in Marin County, 9 percent in San Francisco County and 8.3 percent in San Mateo County.
