Rising unemployment translated into lower gas prices at the pumps over the Independence Day holiday weekend.

Gas prices fell by a penny a gallon nationwide and by four cents a gallon in Florida over the past week, according to AAA Auto Club South.
The auto club noted that this year's price decline leading up to July 4th was the fifth such decline in the past decade. The auto club said its records showed prices at the pump have increased three times in the past ten years twice and remained unchanged twice in the week leading up to the major summer holiday.
The U.S. Department of Energy is attributing the price decline to a fall in consumer demand nationwide and the highest unemployment rate in more than a quarter century.
