PITTSBURGH - Losing your job can leave your finances in ruins -- but if it happens in Pittsburgh, you'll have an easier time covering expenses than somewhere else.

Forbes magazine recently ranked Pittsburgh as America's best city in which to be unemployed.

According to the rankings, Pittsburgh is the No. 1 city for the rate of unemployment benefits. A recipient gets an average of 46.9 percent of his or her annual salary -- up to $539 a week.

Miami is near the bottom of the list, paying only 18 percent of a recipient's annual salary.

City Council President Doug Shields said Pittsburgh stands out for two reasons.

First, he said, Pennsylvania has the unique ability to obtain a wealth of subsidies.

"Nationally, it's a problem," Shields said. "We've seen many, many resources dry up that were there to help with those problems. Federal funding to cities has been on a downward slope."

Second, he said, many Pittsburghers have the special gift of looking out for people with less.

"You go back to the days when (former Allegheny County Sheriff) Gene Coon stopped foreclosure on steel workers, or faith-based organizations attending to people," Shields said. "Pittsburgh is a special place. The good news is we're recognized as a place where we care."

Currently, Pittsburgh's unemployment rate hovers around the national average.
