R.I. Switches To Paperless Unemployment Check SystemThe Providence Journal
March 27, 2007
PROVIDENCE, R.I. --No more paper checks for Rhode Island residents collecting unemployment.
The state Department of Labor and Training yesterday began to transfer roughly 50,000 recipients to a paperless system that offers either direct deposit or a debit card-like option.
Department spokeswoman Laura Hart says paper unemployment checks will cease to exist in the next seven business days.
Officials say the move will not only be more convenient for many customers, it is also expected to save the state about a half (m) million dollars per year in printing and processing costs.
Hart says recipients had the direct-deposit option prior to the new program and most people appear to be sticking with that.
