LINCOLN, NE. - Nebraskans who get unemployment benefits will not have to wait for checks to land in their mailboxes.

State Labor Commissioner Fernando Lecuona III said Nebraska is the first state to give the unemployed two electronic options: Having money deposited directly into their accounts or added to their debit cards.

Gov. Dave Heineman said the move away from so-called snail mail is expected to save the state about $300,000.

The transition began earlier this year and now almost all payments are done electronically. So far 96,000 payments totaling about $20 million have been processed electronically.
