LINCOLN — Nebraskans who missed work because of problems created by recent storms may be eligible for disaster unemployment benefits, federal officials said today.

The benefits are available to people living in one of the 15 counties approved for personal disaster aid because of storms occurring from May 22 through June 24.

Those counties are: Buffalo, Butler, Colfax, Custer, Dawson, Douglas, Gage, Hamilton, Jefferson, Kearney, Lancaster, Platte, Richardson, Sarpy or Saunders.

Disaster unemployment benefits are for people who do not qualify for other unemployment insurance benefits and are unable to work because their place of employment was put out of operation or who could not travel to work because of the disaster.

The benefits also are available to self-employed people who were prevented from working by the disaster, people who became the major support of a household because the main breadwinner died due to the disaster, or people who cannot work because of an illness or injury suffered as a result of the disaster.

The deadline for applying for benefits is Aug. 4. For more information, call the Nebraska Claims Center at 402-458-2500. Applicants can make free calls to the state claims center from local Workforce Development offices.
