Initial claims for unemployment insurance in Texas rose last week to 14,260, a 7.6 percent increase over the previous week.
But the number of initial claims for benefits declined when compared with the same week in 2007, according to data from the Texas Workforce Commission.
Continuing jobless claims -- or those who have received benefits for more than one week -- rose slightly to 103,209 last week, a 3.2 percent increase from a week earlier.
Continuing claims jumped 22 percent when compared with the same week a year ago. Year-over-year continuing claims offer a more stable view of the status of unemployment claims. The increase in unemployment claims since last year indicates that while Texas is creating new jobs, the state is also coping with the economic instability facing the rest of the country.
