Minnesota employers added a net 10,300 jobs in July, the state's first monthly employment gains since August 2008.
The state's unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent from 8.4 percent in June.
State officials cautioned not to read too much into one month of job gains and stressed that the economy has a long way to go to recovery. "If we can string two or three months together of positive news, I'll be more confident," said Dan McElroy, commissioner of the Department of Employment and Economic Development.
Speaking from the Hennepin North WorkForce Center in Brooklyn Park this morning, McElroy noted that there are still 175,000 Minnesotans collecting unemployment and twice as many people unemployed than a year ago.
Eight of the state's 11 industry sectors gained jobs in July, led by leisure and hospitality, which added 3,900 jobs.
The job market is fiercely competitive with eight people competing for each job opening, according to a state survey from April through June.
