Even good news can have a downside.

Minnesota’s unemployment rate of 8 percent last months was nearly two percentage points lower than the 9.7 percent recorded nationwide. But the state’s good fortune means it likely won’t qualify to get unemployment benefits extended.

A bill making its way through Congress would extend unemployment benefits another 13 weeks. The measure, though, only applies to states with unemployment rates above 8.5 percent.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development estimates about 1,000 unemployed people in Minnesota see their jobless benefits run out every week. Unemployment benefits in Minnesota presently run up to 79 weeks.
